Tile Tuesday
Sadly neglected and possibly unappreciated – the fate of many tiled floors. Barbara spotted this particular example several years ago in a front garden in Eastbourne. An unusually complex design for a garden path, perhaps making a statement of status at the time, we felt it was a very deserving addition to our collection of tile-inspired patterns.
What a handsome quilt this would make! Chris is still working on the pattern for the quilt but in the meantime there is a pattern to make a runner based on this path – with a somewhat smaller, simplified border – available from our Payhip shop or you read about it here.

We do love Minton tiles! Above is an EQ interpretation of a tiled doorstep in the immediate neighbourhood of C&B Towers – this would make an eye-catching table runner in any colour scheme. Chris has written a pattern which can be found over at our sister site Meadowside Designs (payhip.com/meadowsidedesigns).

For Tile Tuesday this week we are heading to sunny Portugal for a little colour and inspiration –
Typical sharp colour combinations of yellow and blue abound – a combination that would be equally distinctive in a quilt. And what wonderful lines and shapes for applique!

Following on from last week’s post featuring Minton tiles here’s another Minton tiled floor in it’s original domestic setting. This one was spotted in Lichfield, Staffs – with some difficulty as it was hiding in an estate agent’s window there. Not terribly exciting in this picture and not terribly visible either.
But from this image (and a trusty notebook/pencil combination, followed by EQ7) Chris was able to draft a pattern and produce a quilt which we think is rather handsome. Barbara is currently resisting the urge to cut up fabric and dive right in to this project – and, as we know, resistance is sometimes futile!

No surprise then that we now have a goodly collection of tiled floor images sourced from house sale particulars!

It was this floor that started our quest to photograph tiled floors in and around our part of Staffordshire and beyond – and it’s still one of our favourites.
It’s a perfect quilt with Ohio Star blocks on point and a pieced border. Applique designs in there as well.

It’s so easy to get side-tracked! Especially on, with or by social media. Today’s Tile Tuesday post presented itself via the Instagram account of David Wade (dav.d_wade) where we found many lovely things. This is a screenshot from his account –
No, we’re not suggesting replicating this tile pattern in full but with a little time spent in EQ8 we came up with this interesting block taken from part of the pattern above –
But, if you follow the grid lines of the block, this is not terribly easy to piece. Back to the EQ8 drawing board and there are 2 redrawn versions, both of which are much more pieceable –

Tile Tuesday
Last Tuesday we showed you part of a floor from the villa at Fishbourne and a diagram of a quilt block and possible quilt. This Tuesday over on our sister blog Meadowside Designs you can download a pattern for the block in different sizes and find lots of ideas for even more quilts and colours.
As a reminder – here’s the block, in the original black and white of the mosaic floor with some added pale grey for extra interest.
We also showed you an idea of what a quilt could look like with the blocks turned on point, but what about adding sashing between the blocks and changing the colours?
There are lots more ideas for quilts and settings in the pattern sheet many of which also incorporate the borders from the original floor.

Starting our Tile Tuesday series with Roman mosaic floor tiles in monochrome – from this fragment you can see that this floor design was an arrangement of “blocks” with sashing and border of squares on point. Almost like a sampler quilt!

We translated the main block fragment above into a complete virtual block with the help of EQ8 –
Looks super stylish in monochrome and a simple grid of 9×9 squares – we can feel a quilt coming on!
