Our August EQ Doodle block is Birds in the Air. There are so many ways to use colour and scraps in this block – and its great for using up those left-over half-square triangles too. So whether you have plenty of the same colours, or not much of anything you can make lots of blocks and put them together. Ideally for each block you need a consistent ‘background’ colour – it needn’t be the same fabric, just the same shade of the same colour (more or less) – a variety of whites, or creams, or greys perhaps; or go darker and use navy, black, or dark grey with brights or pastels.
And once you have made lots of blocks you can put them together and twirl them around and make a variety of patterns. You’ll find lots more ideas on the EQ Doodles page (in greyscale).
If you want to have a go at making the block you can download the rotary cutting measurements for a 6 inch block here courtesy of Electric Quilt (EQ).
The December Doodles are here on our Doodles page and Barbara was feeling a little festive when she started colouring these in! The blocks used are Rolling Star and Five-Patch Chain.
You can download a colouring sheet to design your quilts – festive or otherwise – here.
If you head over to Meadowside Designs you will find the templates for a 10 inch Rolling Star block and the cutting instructions for a 10 inch Five-Patch Chain block in case you fancy recreating your design in real fabric.
By popular demand …. the next EQ6 class will be on Saturday 27th November at Stone Station. This time we’ll be looking at Creating Quilts with EQ6. Further details and a booking form are on the website. Sadly, its not the first Saturday of the month, so no Farmers’ Market but that near to Christmas there will be some form of entertainment in the town – we’ll keep you posted nearer the time. Places limited to 8, so ‘book early to avoid disappointment’! In the meantime, here’s a couple of quilts (no borders yet) conjured from the last class –
See you at Malvern …
For the EQ class last week we loaned a laptop to one of our faithful students rather than have her miss the class – her copy of EQ6 had been ordered from the States and was caught up in the volcanic ash disruptions so didn’t arrive in time. We thought it might be fun to pick up just a little bit of the work from the class and mess around make a few virtual quilts from some of her sample blocks. So with many thanks to Jennie and the power of Jaffa cakes here they are –
Wonder if any of these will make it into fabric? Maybe with a high dosage of Jaffa cakes ….?
Just a quickie to let you know I’ve updated the website and put a new Free Pattern there. Everyone seems to be getting very excited about the evening class sampler quilt we’ve been planning so we thought we would share the patterns for some of the blocks we have used in previous sampler classes. First up is the Carrie Nation Quilt block.
We’ve given instructions for making the block at both 8 inch and 12 inch plus lots of ideas for colouring the block and putting several together to make a quilt using just that block. A couple of ideas are on our flickr page, as you may have noticed from the sidebar, and we hope to update the EQ Doodles page soon to show you some more. In the meantime here’s what the block looks like in grey scale (in one colouring) and an example of a quilt. You can of course just make one or two blocks and wait for us to put up instructions for further 4-patch blocks so you can make a Sew-Along-Sampler with us. We may even manage to find the original 4-patch sampler quilt and take a photo of it.
